Jokowi–Ahok: Alike but Not the Same
16 April 2020
Alike but not the same — that’s how Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) describes his closeness with his partner, Joko Widodo (Jokowi). According to Ahok, while they differ in physical appearance and demeanor, they share many similarities.
“The first is our choice of clothing. We’ve both liked wearing checkered shirts for a long time. And jeans — just casual clothes,” Ahok said.
Beyond style, Ahok admits he and Jokowi share similar tastes in food. “Interestingly, we both like bananas. Then there’s es dawet — when he took me to Solo, it was so good. And also these Regal biscuits,” said Ahok while snacking on biscuits in his car during an interview with Tempo.
When Tempo rode in Ahok’s car, several packs of Marie Regal biscuits were visible in the back. A similar sight was found at Jokowi’s temporary residence in Jakarta, in Pasar Minggu.
According to Ahok, there’s only one big difference when it comes to food. “Our tastes are the same. The only difference is that Jokowi can go without eating all day. I can’t. He can eat a banana and last until the evening, but I’d get hungry,” he said.
Ahok admits he’s more fiery, while Jokowi is calmer and more composed. This calmness often tempers Ahok. The father of three notes that Jokowi is sometimes “too humble,” a stark contrast to himself, who enjoys showing achievements — possibly due to cultural differences.
“But despite our different demeanors, we share one similar trait: we’re both stubborn. No matter what, we can’t be changed,” he said. In addition to being strong-willed, Ahok also shares Jokowi’s discipline, a value they both apply in carrying out their daily duties.
